Kadampa Meditation Center Hong Kong (KMC HK) was established to provide people in Hong Kong with the opportunity to learn about and practice Buddha’s teachings. To fulfill this aim we have created a peaceful city sanctuary located in the heart of Causeway Bay. Based on the books of the contemporary Buddhist meditation master, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, we present Buddha’s teachings in an accessible manner that can easily be integrated into our modern lives.

Established nearly 13 years ago, many Hong Kong people currently participate in our drop-in meditation classes and advanced study programmes at the main Centre in Causeway Bay and the branches throughout the city.

KMC HK is run by volunteers who themselves are dedicated practitioners, and we have a warm and welcoming community. Please feel free to drop in for a visit. In addition to the beautiful meditation room which we have a 7-foot Buddha Shakyamuni statue, you can also check out our bookstore and gift shop, or just spend time in our comfortable sitting and reading area.

For those who wish to get involved with our community, we have many different volunteer opportunities where it’s easy to make new friends, learn new things, and help spread love and happiness throughout our great city. In these hectic and distracted times, it is wonderful to be part of a spiritual community dedicated to improving oneself and benefiting others.

‘We are following ancient tradition, but in our presentation and activities we are respecting modern society.’ Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

In 2002, Kadampa Buddhist teacher Geshe Kelsang Gyatso established Vajradhara Buddhist Meditation Center in Hong Kong and requested one of his senior students, Gen Kelsang Tonglam, to become the principal teacher.

The Center started off in a small flat on Stuart Road in Wanchai. At the beginning, we offered English and Cantonese drop-in meditation classes. Gradually we also offered English and Cantonese advanced study programmes and Cantonese Teacher Training Programme.

With an unprecedented volume of people seeking these teachings and meditations each week, we faced an immediate need to expand. In April 2005, we moved to a bigger rented premise on Tai Wong Street East in Wanchai. The ground floor was World Peace Café and the Centre was located on the first and second floors. The World Peace Café was all run by volunteers. And we changed our name to Kadampa Meditation Centre Hong Kong.

In 2011, the landlord increased the monthly rental to an amount which we were not able to afford and we had to move. We are so fortunate to be able to find the present premise in Causeway Bay, one of the busiest districts in Hong Kong, facing the main road and opposite to the Victoria Park. In January 2012, the new Centre was opened and Gen Kelsang Rabten is our Resident Teacher.
