Meaningful to Behold
Becoming a friend of the world

“Nowadays, with the world in turmoil, there is a particular need for modern-day people to cultivate Bodhichitta. If we are to make it through these perilous times, true Bodhisattvas must appear in the West as well as in the East.” – Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche

Alienation, intolerance, disharmony, and a strong distinction between friend and foe are facts of modern-day human experiences. What can we do to change this dire situation?

Buddha taught the path of the Bodhisattva so that we can improve our compassion to its fullest potential, and transform all our daily activities into ways of benefiting others. This path was exquisitely explained in the universally loved poem Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life by the 8th century master Shantideva. We now have the precious opportunity to study its commentary, Meaningful to Behold, in which the effectiveness and profundity of this wonderful poem are revealed in full and made applicable for our time. By sincerely putting these teachings into practice, we can see how it is possible for ourselves to become a true modern-day Bodhisattva, a friend of the world who cherishes everyone they meet, inspiring others, bringing warmth and harmony to this often negative world.

What Happens at a class
Each class begins with chanted prayers and a guided meditation, after which the Teacher reads an assigned selection from the book (usually 3-6 pages) while giving commentary to the text. The students then divide into pairs to discuss the material and help one another with memorisation of the essential points. The Teacher and students then conclude the class by deciding upon a practice to engage in during the coming week.
